At the turn of the seasons, my friend and I went to Stockholm in Sweden, which was another new country off my bucket list in 2016. It’s been a good year of traveling. This trip was also my very first visit to Scandinavia, a region of the world I’ve been wanting to see for years. Mainly because in my mind everybody is nice there, and the weather is cold and wintery, and nature is beatiful. Honestly, Stockholm met all those expectations.
Besides that, there is so much to see, do, and eat while you’re there. Here’s what I loved the most:
- ABBA museum: You might have heard of this little band who became known for their Eurovision Song win with Waterloo. Just like myself, you might love them to bits. For those kindred spirits, I would definitely suggest a visit to the ABBA museum in Stockholm. Honestly, it’s not the greatest in terms of information, but it is highly interactive. For instance, you can play in a music video, you can do karaoke, you can even perform on an actual stage. All that, while being surrounded by everything ABBA. It can get quite busy, and the halls are not very wide, so be prepared to get annoyed with other visitors while you are just trying to get in that chopper.
Here’s me being way too happy at the ABBA Museum - Fotografiska: Currently they have an exhibit of Anton Corbijn, which is the main reason my friend and I went there. If you’re a fan of music, you’ll probably recognize some of the artists that are photographed, all in black and white. The museum is beautifully set up, with wide halls and benches for you to sit and contemplate how amazingly awesome Keith Richards really is. Or is that just me? Also, there is a wonderful museum restaurant with Swedish pastries, and fresh salads and sandwiches, with a view over Stockholm to boot.
- Skeppsholmen: When you look at a map of Stockholm, you’ll notice that the city is made up of many islands in various sizes, all linked up by bridges or ponts. Walking on the island of Skeppsholmen made me feel like I was walking on a hillside in rural Sweden with the orange leaves and the cold fresh air creating the ultimate fall atmosphere. It’s quiet, and feels miles away from the busy city centre. I saw many Swedish people cycling here, as well as enjoying a picknick next to the water that surrounds Stockholm’s islands. You can get the pont from this island over to Djurgarden, to visit the ABBA Museum or the attraction park that is located there.
- Gamla Stan: The old city centre is named Gamla Stan and is gorgeous. Alleys and small streets with shops on every side. Almost all restaurants and cafes have the opportunity to sit outside in cute hillside terraces. It’s adorably charming. Definitely worth it to walk through this area, although it can also be quite touristic, with many souvenir shops with harsh lighting and the same merchandise.
- F&B: For your local taste of Food & Beverage you can basically go to any restaurant where you will most certainly see some Köttbullar (Swedish Meatballs) on the menu. While you’re here, be sure to try any salmon dish, as the fish here is out of this world. They’re fatty, and they pack a whole lot of flavour. Also, we had a moose burger, which was just divine. I feel like moose is actually a bit spicier than beef.
The Swedish beer Åbro is light and delicious. I have to warn you though, it is quite expensive to drink alcohol in Sweden. Especially if you want to have a glass of wine or beer at a restaurant. In shops, bottles are less expensive.
What are your favourite things to do in Stockholm? Do you have any tips? What city should I visit next you think?
These are great tips! I would also suggest adding Skogskyrkogården and the Vasa Museum to the list 🙂
